The Kanchenjunga region is one of the most remote and pristine destinations in Nepal. It is named after the world’s third-highest peak, Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 meters). The region offers some of the most beautiful landscapes, richest ecosystems and exceptional cultural experiences in Nepal. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasts of several rare species, including snow leopard, red panda and Himalayan black bear, among others. Besides its wide range of flora and fauna like rhododendron forests mixed with oak, pine and birch; alpine grasslands; meadows carpeted with wildflowers etc., the region is home to Indigenous cultures such as Limbu, Rai and Sherpa who will mesmerize you with their traditional lifestyle.
Kanchenjunga trekking has two main variations – North Base Camp and South Base Camp. Both treks are equally challenging, requiring very good physical condition as they involve long climbs over high passes, rugged terrain, and walking through delightful villages isolated from modern civilization. The 20- 25 days North Base Camp Trek provides stunning views of Kanchenjunga massif together with other Himalayan giants while also providing wonderful experiences on mountain landscapes, glaciers, etc., whereas shorter by a week, South Base Camp Trek provides a rich source of biodiversity route making the journey more thrilling.
You will cross several suspension bridges below which torrents rage high above forested river valleys. Walk through quaint terraced fields perched on mountain slopes overlooking bucolic river valleys that keep tickling your fancy throughout the trip. There are also splendid viewpoints along these trails. Before catering to tourists, all these areas remained hidden from the outside world except for some explorer’s mountaineering or botanical trips.
