Nar Phu Valley Trek: Overview

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a 16-day restricted area adventure located in the Manang District, north of the Annapurna region in Nepal. It lies between the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges and offers a remote “Hidden Valley” experience with high-altitude deserts and traditional Tibetan-style villages. The trek is less crowded than other popular routes and includes a challenging crossing of Kang La Pass at 5,322m.

This region is part of the Annapurna Conservation Area and is home to Khampa communities living in ancient stone villages like Nar and Phu. Trekkers enjoy close views of major Himalayan peaks such as Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and even Mt. Manaslu in the distance. The journey usually starts from Koto, branching off from the Annapurna Circuit.

As a restricted area, trekkers must have a special permit (RAP), travel with at least one partner, and be accompanied by a licensed guide. The 16-day itinerary is designed for proper acclimatization, taking you from green forests in the lower valleys to the high, dry Himalayan plateau in the upper region.

Highlights

  • Delve into the most unspoiled and remote part of the Nepalese Himalayas.
  • Observe the rich Tibetan-influenced culture and lifestyle of the Manaslu and the Annapurna trekking regions.
  • Enjoy your stay in authentic villages with ancient monasteries, gompas, mani walls, and prayer flags.
  • Engage yourself in the adrenaline-filled crossing of the Kang La and Thorong La high mountain passes.
  • Mark your journey in the highly restricted culturally abundant villages of Nar and Phu.
  • Relish in the most stunning and majestic views of Annapurna I and its ranges: Himlung Himal, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and the eighth tallest grandeur in the world, Mt. Manaslu (8,163m).
  • Immerse yourself in the scenic and cultural apple orchards of Jomsom.
  • Charge up with the various adventurous activities in the tourist paradise of Pokhara and many more.

Itinerary

It is a scenic driving day when you leave the Kathmandu valley quite early in the morning through the Prithivi highway, passing by Besisahar along the bank of the Trishuli River in the beginning and later on the old salt trading route of the Annapurna Circuit Trek to call it a day at Jagat, enjoying the picturesque paddy fields, traditional villages, and incredible mountain.

Max. Altitude: 1,300m / 4,265ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

You will head to Chame early in the morning after a delicious breakfast at Jagat by the track that gradually climbs uphill to cross the suspension bridge and take a steep, descending hike through the rocky trekking trail to Tal village with a jaw-dropping cascading waterfall.

After Tal, you will continue through nature’s splendor over an enthralling hanging bridge to the lower section of Dharapani and finally to the higher Dharapani as the destination of the day.

Max. Altitude: 1,860m / 6,200ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

Welcome to the vicinity of Nar Phu Valley. In around 5–6 hours, ramble from Dharapani, making a way through the dense wood of pine and fir, numerous old-style monasteries, and typical Himalayan settlements, to Bargarchhap.

From Bargarchaap, you will be granted the majestic sight of Annapurna II, Manaslu, and several other unnamed peaks when you keep up the pace through the pine forest, which leads you to a tiny village called Koto.

Max. Altitude: 2,610m / 8,563ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

In Kota, you will register your restricted area permit and begin trekking along the banks of the Soti Khola through wonderful pine forests via multiple suspension bridges and tumbling waterfalls, finally arriving in Dharamsala.

From here onwards, the trekking route of the day moves forward with expanded surrounding views and thinner woods, from where the village of Meta is another hour and a half of a sharp climb on the Tibetan Plateau, watched over by Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II.

Max. Altitude: 3,560m / 11,680ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

The trekking path of the day climbs and lowers constantly, eventually making it to Chyaku by way of a hanging bridge in between that has a glorifying view of Annapurna and Pisang before reaching Kyang.

On leaving the submarine rocks and seasonal tents behind, you will arrive at Phu Khola and the entrance gate of the Phu village, which might give you a rare sight of distinctive blue sheep, including the guaranteed multi-culture, multi-customs, and diverse traditions that multiply on visiting Tashi Lhakhang Monastery in the lap of Himlung Himal and others.

Max. Altitude: 4,250m / 13,944ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

High-altitude mountain passes often pose the risk of acute mountain sickness, which can be prevented if acclimatized thoroughly. Therefore, you will use this day to explore Phu village, which has plenty to discover, and let your body adapt to the high Himalayan mountains.

You will be presented with the option to wander up to Himlung base camp or roam around the town’s mini alleyways, where the climb up via a glacial valley to the base camp of Himlung adds an additional adventure, providing you a great sense of achievement upon successful ascent

Max. Altitude: 4,250m / 13,944ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

It is a calm trekking day as you move forth to Nar, which is comparatively more active than the valley of Phu, by climbing up a steep ridge over Nar Phedi. The historic village savors some of the best scenery, passing by beautiful chorten painted in different colors with bamboo tops.

Despite being near the main Annapurna Circuit Trekking Trail, the valley of Par is often overlooked by visitors, assuring a true Himalayan adventure while you spend your night at recently constructed tea houses on the valley outskirts.

Max. Altitude: 4,250m / 13,944ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

What an ideal day to relax and learn about the local people, their socio-customs, culture, and unique practices at the Nar village. The monasteries, filled with the aroma of pleasant burning incense, are a fantastic spot to meditate and watch the time pass by.

What is even more interesting is that each household in Nar has at least one child studying Buddhism, showcasing the unique identity of the native Himalayan tribe.

Max. Altitude: 4,110m / 13,484ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

It is going to be a long trek day, so you will rise early and make your way to the Kang La Pass, ascending by the lateral moraine of Temdenzon Khola and passing by yak pastureland with a remarkable view of the west face of Pisang Peak.

Thereafter, you will chase the well-trod Annapurna Circuit leading to Jhombu Kharka, also known as Kang La Phedi or the bottom of Kang La Pass, from where you will eventually ascend the pass and treat yourself to a breathtaking panorama of Annapurna I, Tilicho Peak, and Gangapurna.

Then, the trail descends with a scree-like hike down to Ngawal village in 3 hours to stay overnight at the tea house.

Max. Altitude: 4,110m / 13,484ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

Today, you will depart from Ngwal along the banks of the Marsyangdi River to Manang. With the surreal vistas of the Annapurna and Tilicho Peak ranges, you will pass through numerous forests and settlements, such as Braga and Paugh.

In Mungli, the route of the day rejoins the main Annapurna trackway, where you will continue the trek until Manang.

Max. Altitude: 3,660m / 12,008ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

You will travel northwest from Marshyangdi Valley to Jar Sang Khola Valley, crossing a creek to reach Tenki village, while the trail throughout the journey of this day winds through farmland and a few juniper trees before climbing to the little village of Gunsan.

Passing by the flat mud roofs of Gunsan dwellings, you will ascend to gorgeous hills to Yak Kharka upon crossing a little river on a wooden bridge. As the locals breed horses and yaks, you might see them grazing in the nearby alpine meadows.

Max. Altitude: 4,110m / 13,484ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

It is another most adventurous trekking day when you will be going to Thorong Phedi, which is the base of challenging Thorong La Pass upon ascending to a ridge from Yak Kharka, then descend and cross the Marsyandi river on a hanging bridge.

There will be a small footpath across a slope that drops at Thorong Phedi, where you will prepare yourself for the upcoming high-altitude pass crossing while savoring a cinnamon roll with a fairly short hike passing by the landslide region for a few moments.

Max. Altitude: 4,600m / 15,092ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

What a lovely day to conquer the high-altitude pass of Thorong La, connecting the inner world of mountains to its adventurers. It can be misty when you go out early in the morning, but that gets better as the sun rises.

The backdrop of the Annapurna ranges will keep on inspiring you to push through the icy air and steep terrain in the 15-kilometer route of the pass above 5,000 km, taking at least nine hours to complete, and descend to Muktinath to conclude the long trek day.

If you find it more strenuous, mules can ease your journey to celebrate success with a satisfying dinner at a cozy lodge in the holy sight of Muktinath.

Max. Altitude: 5,416 mMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

In the morning, you can stroll around the 108 water sprouts of the Muktinath Temple. It is not necessary to take a bath unless and until you prefer to take a cold shower or have a strong faith in Hinduism.

After breakfast, you will be destined for Jomsom via Jharkot and Khisar villages, first going to Ekle Bhaati and then roaming by Kagbeni down the Kali Gandaki River’s bank to Jomsom, looking at the entire dynasty view of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri.

Max. Altitude: 3,800m / 12,467ftMeals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinnerAccommodation: Tea houses and local lodges

The 16-day itinerary of the Nar Phu Valley Trek by Ammonite Adventure includes a 20–30 minute flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, where you will be followed by the scenic Himalayan views on the left from the windows.

An alternative is to add an additional three of four trek days, down Mustang or up to Poon Hill. However, an early morning flight to Pokhara is the best way to spend a full day charging yourself.

You are at the end of the trek as you depart early and take a tourist bus to Kathmandu, offering tempting vistas of the scenery, including traditional villages, terraced farms, and full-speed streams along the bank of the Marsyangdi River and the Trishuli.

Returning to Kathmandu will take you around 7-9 hours, depending on the traffic conditions of the day, covering around 200km. We hope you enjoyed the Nar Phu Valley Trek with us. Thank you!

Types of accommodation and food en route to the Nar Phu Valley

Like most of the high-altitude trekking destinations in Nepal, the Nar Phu Valley Trekking Route also offers descent-type mountain lodges and teahouses. Although the quality of these houses can vary a lot depending on the elevation, the facilities tend to be limited at higher altitudes; they are usually comfortable enough to take a rest for the night.

Usually, rooms are shared among two trekkers, consisting of two separate wooden beds, mattresses, bed linens, pillows, and blankets. The host of the tea house or local lodge serves you typical Nepalese-Tibetan meals. International dishes might be uncommon in more remote and highly elevated areas.

Nonetheless, anticipate the basic food and accommodation in the trekking trail to Nar Phu Valley, which are essential factors for the raw Himalayan tea house trekking acquaintance, simple yet the most suitable and reliable to complete the overall adventure journey to the Nar Phu Valley.

Good thing all lodging and meals during the trek are included in the trip cost, so all you have to do is make the most of this 12-day Nar Phu Valley expedition.

TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) Card

The standard permit regulated by the Nepal government itself to keep the database of the trekkers for safety and security purposes is the TIMS card to provide necessary aid in case of any sort of emergency occurrence.

How much you will be charged for the TIMS card depends on the nationality of the trekkers trekking the Nar Phu Valley, which is:

  • NPR 600 for SAARC citizens for solo trekking, which will cost NPR 300 on the group price.
  • NPR 2,000 for all the tourists per person, which comes to NPR 1,000 on a group trip.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

In the winter and summer, it costs USD 75 per person for a week and USD 15 per day for each extra day after the first week.

Nar Phu Valley Trek Difficulty and acute mountain sickness

The adventurous expedition to the Nar Phu Valley is taken as a moderately challenging teahouse trekking involvement within the Annapurna region of Nepal. A perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, suitable for each trekker, whether they are a beginner or a well-experienced trekker seeking an authentic journey of a lifetime.

The Kang La and Thorong La Pass is slightly tiresome yet the most rewarding section of our 16-day Nar Phu Valley itinerary, where the high altitude can lead to the spotting of symptoms of acute mountain sickness. Hence, as your trustworthy trekking companion, we request trekkers and adventurers to not skip acclimatization days, explore the highly elevated areas during the day, and descend back to the lower region to let their bodies adapt accordingly.

Most of the trekking sessions are above 3,000m in rocky terrain with few steep ascents and descents; therefore, advanced physical preparedness is recommended a month before the Nar Phu Valley trek departing days, along with the acquaintance of local professional guides.

Trekking group/single

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a trip into one of Nepal's most secluded and pristine areas. It is open to both solo travelers and groups. Whether you prefer the liberty of solo travel or the camaraderie of a group trek, we are capable of tailoring the trek for you.

If you have your group, we provide you with group discounts. It is such a wonderful way to save while venturing together. Please note that these discounts are only for groups you bring; they are not for the ones organized by Ammonite Adventure.

Who Can Do This Trek

This trek is suitable for intermediate and advanced trekkers, but beginners can also do it with good preparation. You should have a good fitness level, as you will walk long hours and cross high passes above 5,000m. Regular walking, light hiking, and basic stamina are enough if you prepare well before the trek.

How to Reach Nar Phu Valley Trek Starting Point

The trek usually starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Jagat (1,300m) by jeep or local bus. The road is partly smooth and partly rough, especially after Besisahar. An alternative route is to drive to Koto or start from the Annapurna Circuit trail.

A Typical Day on Nar Phu Valley Trek

A normal trekking day includes 5–7 hoursof walking through villages, forests, and mountain trails. You will have three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, dinner) at tea houses. The trail offers a mix of nature, culture, and mountain views, making each day different and interesting.

Extra personal expenses on Trekking

Our trek package Nar Phu Valley will largely cover your on-trip expenses; however, there are still some costs that you will have to pay out of your pocket. Meals and lodging in Kathmandu are not included in the package, and you will have access to a large selection of accommodations ranging from budget lodges to luxury hotels.

You can do the booking online before coming here. Moreover, you will also need your own money for expenses like food and accommodation in Kathmandu, Nepal, visa fees, the travel insurance you purchased, snacks, hot drinks, bottled water, cold beverages, crew tips, and souvenirs.

It's best if you bring cash in a few major foreign currencies and then exchange it for Nepali Rupees either in Kathmandu or Pokhara before you start the trek. The Nar Phu Valley area is very far from the city - there are no ATMs and only Nepali Rupees are accepted in the villages.

Our professional, certified trekking leaders and porters will accompany Trekkers who know these paths better than anyone else. We assign one porter for every two trekkers, with the shared load not exceeding 18 kg. If you want a porter all to yourself, just let us know beforehand.

Our guides and porters hail from the high Himalayan villages and are completely acclimatized to high-altitude trekking.
