  • Trail Status: Dobato to Khopra is clear, but Khayer Lake remains steep and icy, so poles and micro-spikes are recommended.

  • Permit Update: ACAP and TIMS permits are still required and now checked digitally at points.

Itinerary

What a beautiful day to begin the Khopra Danda (ridge) trek with an exciting drive to the tourist paradise of Nepal, Pokhara, following the bank of Trishuli and later on the Marshyanagdi River.

Both of these gushing rivers are famous for adventurous rafting, which is as rewarding as you can imagine at the foot of the hills decorated with dense woods, terraced farms, quaint traditional villages, and stunning mountain views atop them.

Since the day aims to meet the bustling tourist town of Pokhara, not the rafting that you can begin on completing this trip, you will arrive at the city after 7-8 hours of joyride from Kathmandu to finally stroll around the scenic lakeside of Phewa.

Max. Altitude: 1,400mMeals: BreakfastAccommodation: Three-Star-Hotel

The next morning, after arriving at Pokhara, you will savor breakfast and ride a local bus to reach the general trek starting point in the Annapurna region, Nayapul, from where the off-beat roads start, and hence you will be taking a jeep up to Tadapani.

The experience might be unique as it can get grueling at some point, adding much to remember in the adventurous chapter of your life when you enter one of the traditional villages dominated primarily by the locals of the Gurung community.

Max. Altitude: 2,630mMeals: Breakfast- lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Local Tea house

This day you will leave the typical village of Tadapani behind, passing via the lush woods of rhododendron, oak, pine, and primula towards Bayeli Kharka, hiking steeply through the wide countryside route that descends past the rhododendron forest after a minor pass.

The seventh-highest mountain in the world, Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), is stunning and magnificent to wake up to the next morning from this hamlet of Bayli Kharka.

Meals: Breakfast- lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Local Tea house

Today, you will be leaving Bayli Kharka and venturing into the thick forests in between, where one might be able to see some of the rare species of fauna, such as the Himalayan Tahr (goats), along with the national bird of Nepal, the Danfe (pheasants), to reach the pasture land of Chistibung.

The sight of several sky-towering peaks such as Damphus, Tukuche, and Nilgiri, along with the astounding sight of the seventh and tenth largest mountains in the globe, Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and Annapurna (8,091 m), and their ranges above the horizon, looks truly awe-inspiring, inspiring you more and more for the upcoming trek days.

Max. Altitude: 3,450m / 11,318ftMeals: Breakfast- lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Local Tea house

The main highlight of the overall journey is here when you will subsequently ascent to one of the most mesmerizing and least-traversed viewpoints of the Annapurna region, Khopra Danda, with its more extensive views of the Himalayan panorama along with the sunrise above all.

The entire Himalayan ranges are spellbound with the sight of Sikha village at the bottom of the ridge along with the deepest gorge on the planet, Kaligandaki, to watch while you spend the night.

Max. Altitude: 3,660m / 11,811ftMeals: Breakfast- lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Local Tea house

Nearby the extraordinary vantage point of Khopra Danda (Ridge) lies the sacred lake of Khayer, which is not only religiously significant but naturally also profound, set amidst the slopes of the Annapurna Massif and glaciers.

Hindus and Buddhists across the world believe that a dip in this holy lake has a divine superpower to heal, rejuvenate, and cleanse the bad karma of the human cycle, which is usually busier in August or October during the Janai Purnima that you will visit for the day and return to Khopra Danda for the night.

Max. Altitude: 4,600mMeals: Breakfast- lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Local Tea house

On one last glance at the remarkable mountain ranges from Khopra Ridge, the time to retrace the route has come when you will move along the trekking trail, descending to Swanta village by the relatively calm hill.

The village of Swanta is famous for its communal cheese manufacturing, which you can smell in the air while you take a tour around this traditional village and call it the day in the local tea house.

Max. Altitude: 4,600mMeals: Breakfast- lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Local Tea house

It is yet another descending trek day from the lovely town of Swanta to Ulleri through the beautiful farms and fields and a small river that you will cross with a wooden suspension bridge.

After a couple of hours of making it through the hanging bridge, you would join the classic Annapurna Circuit Trekking route, where you would catch up with the local lodge for the day.

Max. Altitude: 4,600mMeals: Breakfast- lunch-DinnerAccommodation: Local Tea house

You are almost at the end of the 10-day package to trek Khopra Danda (Ridge) as you begin to drive back to Pokhara from Ulleri, which is mostly a downhill drive until Nayapul. From Nayapul, the drive is comparatively pleasant until you arrive at Pokhara.

The city of adventurous activities, Pokhara, offers you a wide series of memorable things to do, from boating to kayaking, and canoeing. Everything you could think of is completely possible, and hence we recommend you add at least two extra to not miss any of the highlights Pokhara has to offer.

Max. Altitude: 1,540m / 5,050ftMeals: BreakfastAccommodation: Three-Star- Hotel

It is the last day you will be traveling with your guides and porters from Pokhara to Kathmandu via the Prithivi Highway, passing by several lush meadows, roaring rivers, and verdant hills atop it.

A 7-8-hour driveaway will eventually lead you to Kathmandu, where you can freshen up and stroll around Thamel's tourist town and be blown away by its lively ambiance.

Additional Information

When is the best time to go trek to Khopra Ridge (Danda)?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are the optimum seasons to trek Khopra Ridge due to comparatively steady weather, a mild climate, and hundreds of flourishing flowering plants, making the entire region a piece of heaven in the land of the Annapurna Himalayas of Nepal.

Furthermore, as a lower Himalayan region trekking destination in comparison to a few other higher altitude treks, the trip to the Khopra ridge is appropriate throughout the year, including summer and winter, and might need a little extra packing and physical preparedness to discover the unique perspective of the Annapurna region, which is worth a hike regardless.

Food, accommodation, and drinking water on the trekking trail to Khopra Danda

The Khopra Ridge trek is a communal lodge-based trekking experience where you will be spending nights at cozy local guest houses with tidy and simple rooms opened by the natives of the region to uplift the living standard of this specific trekking route area.

These local tea houses also offer a wide variety of food menus along with drinking water, which is usually boiled. The menu consists of staple Nepali dishes Dal-Bhat and Tarkari, along with bread, tea, coffee, eggs, momo, meat products, and curries ranging from typical Nepali and Tibetan cuisines to some international buffets.

As per the drinking water precisely, bottled water is purchaseable; however, it is advisable to bring or use a reusable water bottle and refill or use purification tablets or filtration systems to make your travel more cost-effective and sustainable to the Khopra Ridge (Danda).

What are the permits to venture to the Khopra Ridge (Danda)?

The TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) card beside the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is mandatory for every foreigner aiming to trek Khopra Danda in Nepal, as it falls under the protected land of the country.

In general, a TIMS card costs NPR 2000 (about USD 20) and an ACAP card costs NPR 3,000 (approximately USD 30), which may vary depending on the nationality of the trekkers and the type of trekking you are hoping for and are payable in Nepalese currency only.

Khopra Ridge Trek Difficulty

The Khopra Danda hike is considered an easy to moderately difficult trek, where the ridge of Khopra itself is the major challenge you will be overcoming with a steep ascent taking two to three hours to summit.

With the right gear, such as sturdy trekking shoes, trekking poles, and professional guides and porters, this challenge can be readily surmountable. In the meantime the unpredictable Himalayan weather can add to the difficulties of the overall journey to the Khopra Danda; hence, it is necessary to pack what is much needed rather than stuffing.

What to pack for voyaging to Khopra Danda?

It can be a dilemma to decide what exactly to pack for the Khopra Danda Trek, which is one of the major factors affecting your overall trip experience. Although making a packing list from scratch depends on your preferences and hassling, here are some of the must-have packing requirements to make your Khopra Danda expedition more memorable:

  • Long-sleeved shirts and pants as moisture-soaking base layers
  • Fleece jackets or down jackets as an insulating layer.
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket in case rain pours.
  • Lightweight and quickly drying trekking pants.
  • Several pairs of woolen socks
  • A pair of warm hats and gloves
  • Sun hat, glasses, and sunscreen cream
  • A perfectly fitting and light-weight pair of hiking boots
  • Camp shoes or sandals
  • Reusable water bottle or hydration system
  • Enough Nepali rupees for unexpected expenses
  • Energy bars, nuts, dried fruits, or other lightweight snacks for energy boosting, etc.

Trekking group/single

The Khopra Ridge Trek is fantastic for trekkers who want a quieter trail with amazing mountain vistas. Whether you are an independent traveler looking for a private trek, or you are traveling with a group of friends and would like to share your experience, we can organize both group and private treks for you. If you come as a group, we offer group discounts that provide outstanding savings opportunities.

However, these discounts do not apply to groups organized by Ammonite Adventure.

We can accommodate any size group. In the event that there are 12 in a group, we provide you with an assistant guide to make sure everything goes smoothly. Each porter will carry the gear of two trekkers, and we will reduce the load capacity of trekkers to 9kg to maximize your comfort.

Extra personal Expenses on Trekking

Though the package price covers the majority of the costs incurred on the Khopra Ridge trek, there are still some expenses incurred that are not included, such as meals and accommodation in Kathmandu city (and the associated travel costs to get there). Kathmandu has lots of accommodation options from budget hostels to luxury hotels, and it is fairly easy to make bookings in advance online, before arriving in Nepal.

Bring cash for your expenses, such as food and accommodation in Kathmandu, Nepal, visa fees, travel insurance, snacks, hot drinks, cold drinks, travel tips for the crew, and souvenirs.

You can bring foreign currency to exchange for Nepali Rupees in Kathmandu or Pokhara before you begin your trek. The villages you will visit on the Khopra route will only accept Nepali currency, and to date, there is very limited access to ATMs.

Ammonite Adventure Crew

On the 10-day Khopra Ridge trek, trekkers will have our certified and professional guides who will lead you through the trek. Porters will be the ones to transport your duffel bags — two trekkers can share one porter, with a maximum combined load of 18 kg. We can also arrange one popper for one trekker.

Our staff members are from small villages in the high Himalayas and have the necessary physical condition to trek at high altitude.

We pay them good wages and provide them with insurance, food, clothing, accommodation, and medical care when needed. In this way, they are fully supported to give you the best trek experience possible.

Our trek leaders have:

  • Trekking first aid training.
  • Official guide certificate of a government-approved trekking program.
  • English proficiency and other language skills.
  • Insight into local culture, history, and biodiversity.
  • Good storytelling skills to present the history of the region well.
  • Good communication skills with people of different backgrounds who are a part of the trek.
  • Calmness and problem-solving skills when in difficult situations.
  • Organizing, planning, and scheduling skills.
  • Understanding and caring for the needs of each trekker

Booking and Payment Process

Ammonite Adventure is a trekking agency that is registered under the Government of Nepal, also a member of TAAN and NMA. This is the first step, and we will do our utmost to confirm this trek; however, flight availability/weather may present challenges for last-minute bookings.

Trip Extensions

After your Khopra Ridge trek, there is scope to extend your trip through other excursions (sightseeing in Kathmandu, visiting Chitwan for a jungle safari, paragliding, rafting, canoeing, etc).

Feedback

We will host a farewell dinner in Kathmandu after your trek. We will present you with a printed certificate, and also request that you provide feedback.

Start from Pokhara → Nayapul → Ghandruk or Tatopani, then trek 4–6 days via Swanta and Chistibung to reach Khopra Danda.

The highest point is Khopra Danda (3,660 meters / 12,008 feet), with an optional hike to Khayer Lake (4,660 meters / 15,288 feet).
