Drinking Water Cost on Manaslu Trek

Drinking water is essential for your health and hydration, and the need is even more felt at higher altitudes on the Round Manaslu Circuit Trek. Natural streams, rivers and springs are, however, available along the trekking trails, but drinking them directly may cause health issues.

Arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu), a representative of your trekking agency, Ammonite Adventure Treks, will welcome you warmly at the new arrival gate and drive you to Thamel, where the main center of the vibrant tourist hub is. To save time at immigration, we recommend completing your online tourist visa form before you fly, though digital kiosks are available upon arrival. After check-in and some rest, we will do a pre-trek briefing to answer any last questions, discuss the upcoming adventure and brief on the digital permit tracking and QR code systems required. This session is important to make you well-prepared and know what to expect. Afterward, there will be free time to walk around the semi-pedestrian streets of Thamel for the rest of the day: wandering for souvenirs, shopping, eating local cuisine, etc. The goal for this first day is to get familiar with your local environment and time zone.

The journey begins early, with Kathmandu to Soti Khola (Altitude 710 meters) drive departing at 7 am. The ride covers from the bustling cityscape to the broader countryside within 6 to 7 hours. The first part of the journey is uphill with well-paved roads, and Dhading Besi (headquarters of the district of Dhading) is the place we first reach. The terrain becomes rough, and unpaved roads go to Arughat and to Soti Khola. On the way, you’ll glimpse rural Nepalese life among a few traditional villages along with terraced fields and the winding Budhi Gandaki River. Upon arrival in Soti Khola by late afternoon, you will check into a local teahouse. Plenty of time in the evening will be available to explore the village and the locals.

The first day of trekking begins around 7:00 AM after breakfast. The way on is an undulating path with many suspension bridges across the Budhi Gandaki River and many ascents and descents rolled into walking. Khursane and the Purbesi will show you the small Gurung culture as you pass by these villages. 

A narrow and rocky trail requires you to watch your steps in selected places. Views of Shringi Himal, along with cascading waterfalls and terraced fields,  accompany us. After approximately 6 to 7 hours of trekking, covering a distance of about 14 kilometers, you'll reach Machha Khola, situated at 900 meters, by mid-afternoon, around 3:00 PM. If you’re lucky, check in to the teahouse for a night, and you can go exploring the village or by the river.

The duration of 7-8 hours to cover 22 km from Machha Khola to Jagat is the trail itself which is both a diverse and challenging one. At times, the path is right alongside the Budhi Gandaki River, and there are suspension bridges.  A major highlight is the cantilever bridge at Yaru Khola, a metal walkway bolted directly into the rock face. Tatopani is quite pleasant to rest,  where you can enjoy the natural hot springs. There are a few hot springs that you will encounter on the trek. The trail then rises through the forests and the terraced slope and descends by the upward path and through such villages as Dovan and Thado Bharyang. The trail becomes a little rocky as one approaches Jagat, the initial start of the Manaslu Conservation Area, but it’s made up of steps and alleys. Jagat is at 1,340 meters, a traditional village with stone streets. Upon arrival, your guide will process your permits at the digital checkpoint, where QR-code tracking is now standard. You will arrive in the evening and get to interact with the people of the village and learn the culture of the people of that region before retiring to bed for the following day's activities of the physical journey.

The day begins at 7, covering 20 kms in 7/ 8 hrs walking to Deng. The track runs parallel to the Budhi Gandaki River through the sub-tropical jungle. Reaching villages likeSalleri and Sirdibas, you will witness more Buddhist religions with Mani walls and prayer flags.

Over the Ghatta Khola, there is a very good suspension bridge that goes as far as Philim, mainly a large Gurung village with famous huge terrains of greenery due to well-developed school projects such as Japanese Non-governmental organizations. Philim is a critical stop where your permits will be checked again at the MCAP office. Going much further into the countryside, some parts of the route are even rockier. The climb to Deng is the last few kilometers uphill through a bamboo forest. Deng is a small village at an altitude of 1860 meters with a population of Gurungs and Tibetans. Arriving late in the afternoon, you can have a free day afterward.

The Namrung trek is 20 kilometers, which starts early in the morning after breakfast and takes around 6 to 7 hours. This is a trail cut through pine and oak forests, and it has several suspension bridges across the Budhi Gandaki River. As you walk through villages near Rana and Bihi Phedi, Tibetan influence will become clearer. You’ll see chortens and a Mani wall on the trail. It is steep, steady and has ups and downs, with nice views up to Himalchuli, Mt Manaslu and other snow-capped peaks. 

As you are approach Namrung at 2 630 meters, the magnificent, billowing barley potato fields have unfolded in front of you and the Himalayas stretch to the back. Namrung is a big village in the Upper Nubri region and features a police checkpoint and a very nice view of the surrounding mountains. Arriving late in the afternoon, you will have the chance to walk around the village, visit some local monasteries, have a good talk with the nice villagers and then rest the night.

Departing Namrung after breakfast the hike passes through several great off-beat villages like Lho and Shyala with old monasteries and affluent Mani walls of the Tibetan Buddhist perspective. The path has a view of enormous faces, with striped Manaslu North (7,157 mtrs), Naike Peak (6,291 mtrs.), and Manaslu (8,163 mtrs.) in the background. 

Of the terrain, common paths are stone stairs with green vegetation cover going down the terraced farming grounds. After approximately 6 to 7 hours of trekking, covering a distance of about 17 kilometers, you'll arrive in Samagaon, situated at 3,530 meters, by mid-afternoon, around 3:00 PM.  It's located halfway between the trough trekkers and climbers and has shops and teahouses. Once your body has acclimatized to this difference in altitude, you will feel fine. You can rest the day strolling up and down the village, visiting Pungyen Princess and/or relaxing after the acclimatization day.

In Samagaon, you need a rest day to acclimatize. Manaslu Base Camp, situated at an altitude of 4,800 meters, is a popular destination for trekkers. Steep up with great views of surrounding glaciers and peaks, and the trail starts early. To reach Samagaon by mid-afternoon to return takes about 7 to 8 hours trip, and it’s a round trip. If you’re after something slightly shorter, there’s a hike to Pungyen Monastery at 4,070 meters that features the local spiritual practices and spectacular mountain visions. The trip around this excursion is something like 4 hours. As is the case, it’s advisable to spend a day at higher altitudes in the coming days and then descend to lower altitudes in Samagaon to sleep and acclimatize for the higher altitudes in the coming days.

Leaving Samagaon at about 7:00 AM, the trek to Samdo is a gradual climb of some 16 kilometers that will take you approximately 4 to 5 hours. The trail passes through juniper and birch forests with the Budhi Gandaki River down below. At an elevation of about 3,860 meters, the terrain starts becoming more stark with less vegetation and trees. The village is made up mostly of people who have migrated from neighboring Tibet; however, there are also a few Nepalese families living in this village as well. You will arrive around lunchtime, meaning that you will have time after lunch and also visit the monasteries further up from your lodge or take advantage of several optional hikes.

Prepare for the Larkya La Pass with a trek to Dharamsala

Leaving Samdo at 7:00 am, the trail to Dharamsala (also known as Larkya Pedi) is a moderate climb covering about 12 kilometers, lasting 4-5 hours. The path is over relatively barren and often rocky terrain with views of the Larkya Glacier and surrounding high peaks. At an elevation of 4,460 meters, Dharamsala will be your home for tonight and serves as the base camp for the upcoming day, crossing over the Larkya La Pass. You arrive before early afternoon by roughly around noon, allowing plenty of rest time to further acclimatize. There is minimal accommodation here at Dharamsala, so it’s recommended that you get in early, settle into your lodging before mid-afternoon and get best prepared for  tomorrow's pass crossing.

Conquered the challenging Larkya La Pass

This is the most challenging day of the trek, starting early, around. The trail today crosses the Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters above sea level. The ascent is steep and demanding, and there is snow and ice; therefore, patience is required. On arriving at the pass, you are rewarded with a view of the peaks such as the Himlung Himal (7,126m), the Cheese Himal (6,820m), and the Annapurna range. From the Bhimtang, the drop is long and steep down moraines, then to alpine meadows. After about 8 to 9 hours of trekking, covering about 24 kilometers, you'll arrive in Bhimtang, situated at 3,720 meters, by mid-afternoon, around 3:00 PM. You do not here have to feel weariness and relax after the pass.

Departing Bhimtang after breakfast down through rhododendrons and pine forests, the path goes over streams and the village of Gho. There are plenty of well-defined paths, some steep sections that can be done, and views of the Manaslu range. After approximately 5 to 6 hours of trekking, covering about 19 kilometers, you'll reach Tilje, situated at 2,300 meters, by early afternoon, around 1:00 PM. Tilje is a large village with many different ethnic groups over which one can gain a bit of understanding of the complexity of the regional cultural patchwork. Trekkers can end the day with their trek, and the rest of their day can be spent exploring the village.

Leaving Tilje after breakfast, It's a short trek (about 1 hour). At this point, you reach Dharapani, where the Manaslu Circuit meets the Annapurna Circuit. The road from here is about 4 or 5 hours on a jeep ride to Besisahar, the administrative center for the Lamjung District. The drive follows along the Marsyangdi River, and you can see waterfalls, terraced fields and traditional villages. Arriving in Besisahar by early afternoon, You’ll arrive at the hotel and have the rest of the day to rest or discover the town.

Return to Kathmandu with unforgettable memories

On the final day of your 14-day Manaslu Circuit Trek, you'll depart Besisahar around 8:00 am. It usually drives about 175 kilometers on average, while the drive usually takes anywhere between 6 to 7 hours, depending on road and traffic conditions. 

It is hot in the hilly tracts while in plains it begins to cool down, one of the hassles of entering town life in comforts. When you reach Kathmandu halfway in the afternoon, we will transfer you to your hotel in Thamel, a lively place with shops. Best Time to Round Trek Manaslu Circuit

The best season to trek for travellers is to journey in the spring period (March to May) and the autumn period (September to November). At these periods the best climate for trekking in the Manaslu region and the best forms of the main attraction of this zone are presented. Along the trails, the blooms of rhododendrons are observed during spring. Most of the high-elevation trails have moderate temperatures and are suited for day hikes.

In autumn, the weather is clear, and you are treated to the view of the world’s eighth tallest mountain, Mt. Manaslu (8163m). No worries about rain, and everyone would have much time to look at the nature view, including Larkya La Pass, with an altitude of 5106m. 

Another best time is winter in December, January and February. However, the weather can be substantially icy and very cold at higher parts of the mountain.

But in terms of the monsoon season, which is June to August, the mountain receives heavy rains and slopes, and trail slides are frequently seen. Therefore, to get the best trekking experience on the Manaslu circuit, you should go for it in the months of either April, May, September or October to enjoy the beauty as well as to enjoy the serene environment of the wonderful trek.

What to Expect in a Teahouse in Manaslu Round Trekking?

On the 14 days Manaslu trek, you will be staying at a teahouse that is located on the trail. The tea houses are not only resting stops but also represent Manaslu's cultural hospitality. Usually, the owners of such places are friendly and open and with an authentic feel around the place. Are There Hot Showers on This Trek?

Yes, in Manaslu Trek, you can take a hot shower, but there’s a price (extra). On average, a hot shower will cost you around $3 to $5. The gas cylinders that are used to heat up the water are carried up on mules, so it’s better if we can try and save water during your trek by limiting your number of showers. 

It takes time and energy to wash your clothes in cold temperatures. Hence, many trekkers change their clothes instead of taking showers. The majority of lodges at lower altitudes have hot shower facilities. At higher elevations, the availability tends to be less frequent. 

14 Days Round Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty Level

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered a moderately challenging trek, however. Difficult uphill climbs and rocky paths mean trekkers will have to walk on different kinds of terrains and this requires good physical strength and stamina. Generally, the overall distance covered during a trek is 177 km, which requires you to trek nearly 12.64 km a day and takes about 14-18 days. The biggest difficulty is the altitude — Larkya La Pass (5160m) is the highest point of elevation that can cause acute mountain sickness if there is no acclimatization period. Untamed weather conditions, inadequate accommodation facilities, and remoteness of the place make this trip’s difficulty level higher, and the pre-planning and training before are necessary.

Charging Your Equipment on the Manaslu Trail

Most teahouses in the Manaslu region provide electricity, often from solar panels. But charges for charging electronic devices such as phones and cameras run between $1 and $5 an hour, with fees higher at higher altitudes.

In order to save on expenses and keep your devices powered, it’s a good idea to strap a power bank or portable solar charger. If you’re a trekker, solar chargers can then be attached to your daypack as you go so it harnesses sunlight. You can also try to save battery life by turning off non-essential applications and turning down the screen brightness.

Do I Need a Porter for the Manaslu Trek?

Though optional, hiring a porter for the Manaslu Circuit Trek can make your trek much more enjoyable. The trails you take are mountain high mountain trails, and by walking, you are walking long hours, which can be tough carrying a heavy backpack. Porters can handle up to 20 kg of load, and with the terrain, altitude, and humidity, trekking with just a small daypack containing essentials such as water, sunscreen, and a camera is possible for you. Hiring a porter will cost you $20 to $25 per day inclusive of their food, accommodation and their insurance.

Manaslu Circuit Round Trek: Travel Insurance Requirements

Precaution is to be taken when planning a Manaslu Circuit Trek, and taking travel insurance is not only advisable but mandatory. Here are the key requirements and considerations for travel insurance specific to this trek:

Comprehensive Coverage

Your insurance should cover your doctor or medical expenses for an injury or illness incurred during the trek, for example, altitude sickness.

Air evacuation may not be available in emergencies in remote areas and also helicopter rescue should be included. Secondly, ensure it’s specifically in your policy.

High-Altitude Coverage

Check to make sure your insurance includes trekking above 6,000 meters. The Manaslu Circuit is close to 170 km long; standard policies may not cover this far.

Proof of Insurance

If you’re booking your trek or going on your trek you may have to show you have insurance. Have physical and digital copies of your insurance at all times.

Solo/Group Trekking

Ammonite Adventure Treks offers private group treks and group sharing treks. If you have your group, the greater the number of trekkers in the large group, the greater the discounts.

Any number is accommodated and an assistant guide is offered for large groups. One porter for every two trekkers. 9 kg maximum weight pack per trekker.

Other Personal Expenditures on Trekking

The package includes all the Manaslu Round trekking charges except for food and accommodation in Kathmandu. There are plenty of hotels and lodges in Kathmandu, and you can make an online reservation.

You will have to carry some cash for Kathmandu accommodation and meal charges, visa, insurance, snacks, drinks, tips, souvenirs, and other personal expenses.

Bring high denomination notes in cash to exchange them with Nepali Rupees as the trekking areas accept only Nepali currency.

Booking and Payment Process

Ammonite Adventure Treks is a government-registered and bonded Nepal trek and tour operator. Additionally, we are members of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and the Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN). Hence, book safely with us.

We require 10% trip cost in advance so that we can book the trip. You can make payment by bank transfer, Western Union, or online directly from our website. You can pay the remaining trip cost in cash, credit card, bank transfer, or western union upon your arrival in Nepal. Payment details and mode of payment will also be notified to you via email.

After you have booked your trek, we would appreciate it if you could forward us other papers such as photocopy of passport, passport photos, travel insurance policy and departure and arrival flight schedule within seven days of your trek booking. There are not many domestic flights to Lukla and Lukla airport is very crowded during trekking seasons.

Last minute Booking

We also accept last-minute reservations for the Manaslu Round trek by Ammonite Adventure Treks. You are required to pay the trip cost in advance, 24 hours before the day of the trek. We try our level best to operate the trek within schedule, but last-minute reservations could be postponed due to bad weather or flight situations beyond our control.

Extension of the Trip

If you wish to stay in Nepal beyond the trek, we can arrange activities for you. Sightsee in and around the Kathmandu region or go on a Chitwan jungle safari, paragliding, rafting, or canoeing.

Feedback

Once you complete the Manaslu Round trek the Ammonite Adventure Treks will ask you to join a farewell dinner in Kathmandu. You will get a completion certificate printed and have the opportunity to provide feedback on your trek.

Yes it is very important because people who fail to do so can develop altitude illness. It requires others to visit at least one acclimatization day in Samagaon (3,530m) before attempting to cross Larkya La Pass.

While it is possible to trek individually, it is compulsory to hire a registered trekking agency because the region is in a restricted zone. Coupled with the avoidance of hazardous conditions, a guide also assists in compliance with the law of the country/region in question.

Engage in cardio fitness and weights as strength exercises. In addition it is also recommended to train in situations which are as close as possible to the conditions to be met on the trail while bearing the pack.
